As the only Level I Trauma Center in the region, new construction ensures accommodation of any emergency. A new helipad at The University of Kansas Hospital is considered state of the art and benefits any patient needing emergency care, including the president of the United States.
Our Level I verification from the American College of Surgeons is the highest designation for trauma care. It recognizes the hospital’s ability to provide round-the-clock care for patients with the most serious trauma injuries, from admission through rehabilitation and follow-up care.

- Comprehensive Specialty Services
The hospital has specialty services readily available to meet the complex needs of trauma patients. These services include burn care, interventional radiology, high-risk obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, neurosurgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, plastic surgery and re-implantation.
- Internationally Recognized Rehabilitation Care
Our rehabilitation program has achieved accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. This means the program has passed a rigorous review and met the requirements for superior standards of care and excellence in patient outcomes.
- 24/7 Services
Located in the Emergency Department, our Level I Trauma Center and its surgeons and operating rooms are available at all times, as are important services like CAT scans and interventional radiology. A specialized nursing and trauma care team is always on site.
- Quick and Efficient Transfer Services
The hospital’s Transfer Center is a one-call service center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It assists patients and referring physicians involved in transferring trauma and critically ill patients to The University of Kansas Hospital.
- Advanced Clinical Trials and Basic Science Research
Patients who are critically injured or ill may be eligible to take part in national trials, and may benefit from original research conducted by our physicians and scientists.
As part of the region’s leading academic medical center, the Trauma Center also offers patients access to physicians in more than 200 specialties that may be needed for treatment and recovery.
