The University of Kansas Hospital's Inpatient Cancer Care provides a comfortable setting for patients undergoing diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic interventions for cancer.
Located on the fourth floor of the hospital, the area creates an optimal environment for the unique needs of cancer patients and their loved ones.
Improved Access to Patients
Inpatient Cancer Care features a large, centrally located nursing station and two additional nursing stations. The area's open design provides nurses with an improved view and better access to patients.
Patient and Family Resource Center
Our new Patient and Family Resource Center provides patients, their families and visitors with cancer information, support and resources. The center features three computers with Internet access, DVDs and brochures.
Three palliative care suites allow us to provide compassionate end-of-life and advanced-stage care in one location. These larger rooms include a family sitting area, convertible furniture for sleeping and a private bathroom. Patients receive emotional, physical and spiritual support from our multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains.
Secure BMT Care
Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) patients, whose immune systems are particularly vulnerable to infection, receive treatment and recovery in a protective environment. Our 12-bed BMT area is isolated from the rest of Inpatient Cancer Care by air-locked doors. It also features a filtered, positive-pressure ventilation system.
Enhanced Outpatient Care
When our outpatient Cancer Center is closed, patients with cancer can receive intravenous medications, blood products, electrolytes or other outpatient treatments here.
Four semi-private rooms in Inpatient Cancer Care can accommodate up to eight hematology or oncology patients.
Our Commitment to Comprehensive Cancer Care
Completion of our new Inpatient Cancer Care areas complements our state-of-the-art outpatient Cancer Center, which opened on our Westwood Campus in August 2007. Combined, these facilities demonstrate The University of Kansas Hospital's continued commitment to serve the needs of cancer patients throughout our region.
Thanks to generous support for Treads & Threads, our annual fundraiser at Kansas Speedway, the hospital was able to expand and enhance Inpatient Cancer Care. Event proceeds provided two new palliative care suites, for a total of three, and patients and their families can now benefit from our Patient and Family Resource Center.
