Patient and Visitor Services

Cafeteria

  • The cafeteria is located near the main elevator bank on the ground floor of the hospital and serves hot meals, sandwiches, salads, snack items and drinks.
  • Cafeteria hours are 6:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. weekends and holidays.

  • Vending machines are available 24 hours a day at the entrance to the cafeteria.

Cash/Stamps

  • An automated teller machine (ATM) and stamp machines are located near the cafeteria on the ground floor of the hospital.

Chaplains

  • Both Protestant and Catholic chaplains are on staff at The University of Kansas Hospital. To reach the Protestant chaplain, call 913-588-5033. To reach the Catholic chaplain, call 913-588-5034.
  • To contact a Jewish chaplain in the Kansas City area, call 913-498-7416.
  • Spencer Chapel, which is located on the first floor of the Wescoe Corridor, is open daily from 6:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
  • Protestant services are held in Spencer Chapel from 11:30 a.m. - noon on Sundays. Communion is scheduled the first Sunday of each month.
  • A Catholic Mass is held at 12:15 p.m. Monday-Friday, 4:45 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.

Gift Shops/Book Store

  • There are two gift shops and a bookstore on the University of Kansas Medical Center campus. They sell convenience items, drinks, snacks, cards, books,magazines and gift items.
  • The Lobby Gift Shop (913-588-5495) is located off the hospital's main lobby, and the Sunflower Gift Shop (913-588-5496) is located on the first floor of the Delp Corridor.
  • The KU Med Bookstore (913-588-2537) is located on the ground level of Orr-Major. There is an outside entrance that you can reach from 39th Avenue.
  • You can also send an ecard and personalized message to inpatients.

Hair and Nail Salon

  • The salon (913-588-2518) is located across from the cafeteria on the ground floor of the hospital and is open to patients and visitors. To make an appointment or ask about in-room patient services, call 913-588-2518.

Information Desk

  • For patient information, call 913-588-5800.

Interpreter and Hearing-Impaired Services

  • Qualified professional and volunteer interpreters, as well as a telephone language line service, are available to assist patients who do not speak English. Call Interpreter Services at 913-588-7811 or page 917-4464.
  • Regionally and nationally certified sign language interpreters are available for hearing-impaired patients. Call Interpreter Services at 913-588-7811 or page 917-4464.
  • Closed captioning is provided on televisions in patient rooms.

Lodging

  • The Information Desk, located near the hospital's main entrance, can provide information about area motels, hotels and boarding rooms.
  • Families of pediatric patients can ask members of the nursing staff about using the pediatric family room or staying at a Ronald McDonald House in the Kansas City area.
  • The Friendship Inn, located near the hospital, offers temporary lodging for patients' families. For information, call the Case Management Department at 913-588-2160.

Mail, Flower and Balloon Deliveries

  • While you are a patient at The University of Kansas Hospital, mail and all deliveries should be addressed to:
    • your name
      c/o The University of Kansas Hospital
      3901 Rainbow Blvd.
      Kansas City, KS 66160
  • Flowers and plants cannot be delivered to intensive care rooms because of infection control requirements.
  • Mail will be forwarded to your home or designated address if it arrives after you leave the hospital.
  • You can also send an ecard and personalized message to inpatients.
  • Latex balloons are not allowed anywhere in the hospital.

Newspapers

  • Newspaper vending machines are located by the hospital's main elevator bank on the 2nd, 4th and 5th floors, as well as by the ground-floor Sudler elevators.

Notary Public

  • A Notary Public service is available weekdays in the Admissions Office (913-588-5807), located off the hospital's main lobby and in Patient Relations (913-588-1290), located near the hospital's main entrance. There is no fee for this service.

Parking

  • Patient and visitor parking is available in the Cambridge Garage, located across from the hospital's main entrance, and in the Olathe Garage, located across from the Olathe Pavilion entrance on Olathe Boulevard. The patient/visitor entrance is on the west side of the Olathe Garage.
  • Valet parking is available at the hospital's main entrance for people who require special assistance.  Hours are 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is a $2 fee. When you are ready to reclaim your vehicle, go to Guest Services, which is located next to the front doors of the hospital.
  • If your vehicle will be in a garage for more than one day, ask about special rates by contacting the Information Desk (913-588-5800) or Patient Relations (913-588-1290). Both are located near the hospital's main entrance.
  • Parking Services offers long-term and handicapped parking spaces to patients and visitors. Call 913-588-5175.
  • All "color zone" parking (marked by blue, red and yellow signs) may be used free of charge from 5 p.m. -  6 a.m. weekdays and throughout the weekends and on holidays.

Patient Meals

  • Registered dietitians oversee your nutritional care.
  • Check with your dietitian or nurse before eating any foods or snacks other than those provided by our nutritional service.
  • Contact your dietitian (913-588-7681) or nurse if you have questions or special needs.
  • Special religious or ethnic meals can be prepared with advance notice.

Patient Relations: Issues/Complaints (Grievances)

  • To help resolve any issues about your hospital experience, bring them to the attention of the nurse or physician responsible for your care or to the nurse manager on your unit.
  • Patient Relations (913-588-1290) is available to assist in all matters related to your satisfaction. These include, but are not limited to, filing a complaint (grievance) regarding unresolved issues or providing information about talking with state licensing or other accrediting organizations about your concern.
  • If you have questions or concerns related to Kansas University Physicians, Inc. (KUPI), contact KUPI Patient Services at 913-588-6627.

Public Restrooms

  • Restrooms are located on each floor of the hospital and in each corridor of the University of Kansas Medical Center campus.
  • To help protect our patients from infection, visitors are not allowed to use patient bathrooms.

Public Telephones

  • Pay telephones are located in the hospital's main lobby and throughout the University of Kansas Medical Center campus.
  • Public TTY-equipped telephones for people who are hearing impaired are located in the hospital's main lobby, near the cafeteria and in the Emergency Department.

Case Management

  • Professional Case Managers are part of the hospital's health care team. They are available to assist with personal or family issues, help plan your hospital discharge and continuing care, discuss your financial concerns and arrange for community services. Contact the Case Management Department at 913-588-2160.

Volunteer Services

  • Hospital volunteers provide an array of services – escorting patients to appointments, wheelchair transportation, delivering mail and flowers, spending time with patients and providing them with comfort items.
  • Volunteers also provide books and magazines to patients and family members. Call 913-588-6507.
