KANSAS CITY, Kan.– The Cancer Center at The University of Kansas Hospital has received the 2004 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award, an award achieved by only eight percent (39 of 429) of the cancer programs surveyed by the American College of Surgeons in 2004.
The award recognizes cancer programs that provide quality care to cancer patients. Such areas as patient outcomes, clinical trials, quality improvements and clear patient care guidelines are among the issues evaluated for the honor.
“This comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen first hand the work in our Cancer Center,” said Irene Cumming, president and chief executive officer of The University of Kansas Hospital. “Our staff, physicians and especially our patients know that we have proven that advanced academic medicine can co-exist with quality patient care.”
The University of Kansas Hospital’s Cancer Center has seen explosive growth in recent years. The hospital more than doubled the size of the Cancer Center in 2003, but patient volumes have already reached 2009 patient projections.
The cancer program has also been a leader in the development of multi-disciplinary care, which brings various specialists and sub-specialists to the patient in one setting, allowing for collaboration and consultation among many cancer experts to determine the best patient care.
