Administrative Fellowship Program

Creating future leaders

At The University of Kansas Health System, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, teaching is an essential part of our vision and mission. That's why we are providing emerging administration professionals with practical skills and experience to help prepare them for the challenges of leadership in the healthcare industry.

Key goals of the program

  • Developing strong leaders for The University of Kansas Health System and the healthcare industry

  • Providing, in the form of well-prepared individuals, a contribution to the healthcare field, our health system and the pool of healthcare management talent

  • Exposing individuals to the philosophy, mission and vision of this organization

  • Providing the opportunity for executives and managers to develop and apply coaching, learning and mentoring skills

  • Gaining exposure to current management concepts and ideas from major academic institutions

Defining the fellow's role

In addition to expectations based on the fellowship structure, fellows are expected to:

  • Take part in active, hands-on, substantive projects that foster development of verbal, interpersonal and analytical skills – and the opportunity to translate academic theory into practice

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the healthcare industry and the components of the organization

  • Communicate information effectively, using the appropriate level of judgment, accuracy and courtesy within internal and external constituents

  • Exhibit accuracy, attention to detail, consistency and ability to meet multiple deadlines in all work efforts

  • Demonstrate the ability to synthesize information (quantitative/qualitative) and complete components of preliminary and final reports, including spreadsheets and financial analyses (if applicable)

  • Exhibit a willingness to take on leadership and non-leadership roles and responsibilities

  • Possess effective management skills

  • Receive assessments like any other employee of the health system per their scope of practice

  • Operations and finance/strategy preceptors
    • Brian Dolan, senior director of supply chain management

Fellowship structure

The Administrative Fellowship Program takes place over 18 months.

First 12 months: Shadowing and projects

  • Rotations take place through functional areas/departments in the health system.

  • Fellows will spend 6 months in operations and 6 months in finance/strategy. The focus changes after 6 months to ensure broad exposure to operational and finance functions of the health system.

    • Ongoing educational activities
      • Committee meeting rotations
      • Administrator on-call pairing
      • Clinical rotations in nursing and clinical professions
      • Leadership meeting attendance
      • Leading lunch-and-learn sessions

    • Ongoing project assignments based on the health system's needs and fellow's knowledge/skills/abilities

Final 6 months: Department/division assignment and projects

  • Project/group ownership based on the defined scope for the fellow's program.

Application process

  • Applications are due October 2, 2017.

  • On-site interviews will take place in late October.

    • A welcome dinner, hosted by the preceptors, will be held the evening before the interview.

    • A half-day of interviews take place with executive team members, including finance and operations senior executives.

    • Following interviews, fellowship candidates receive a tour of the main campus.

  • Offers are extended November 13, 2017.

  • Candidates have 24 hours to accept the offer.
