2009 ANNUAL REPORT

BREAST CENTER CHOSEN FOR PRESTIGIOUS STUDY

Mark Inciardi, MD, research principal investigator

The breast center at The University of Kansas Cancer Center has been selected as one of just 12 sites nationally for a major clinical research study to improve detection of breast cancer in women who have dense breast tissue. The study will determine if 3D automated breast ultrasound, combined with routine screening mammography, is more accurate in detecting breast cancer than mammography alone.

Research indicates women with dense breast tissue – about half of women age 50 and younger, and 30 percent of women older than 50 – are more likely to develop breast cancer. But dense breast tissue can interfere with a mammogram's ability to detect cancer at early stages. Ultrasound has been shown to find cancer not visible with mammography.

More than 20,000 women are expected to enroll nationwide in the study.
