2009 ANNUAL REPORT

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY TARGETS TUMORS

Neurosurgeon Ania Pollack, MD, with the Novalis Tx.

In 2009, we added new technology to the lifesaving treatment options at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. The Novalis TxTM is the very latest in radiation oncology treatment. It provides high doses of radiation to attack a cancerous tumor, focused so precisely that nearby healthy tissue, less than three millimeters away, is undamaged.

The Novalis Tx precisely aims 100 individual beams of high-dose radiation, effectively working like a surgeon's scalpel, to eliminate tumors in hard-to-reach areas, even inside the brain. This new tool can deliver its lifesaving radiation treatment so accurately the treatments for some cancers can be shortened from weeks to just a few days.

An effective option for cancer anywhere in the body, the Novalis Tx can target small tumors with more power than traditional radiation treatments. This is especially useful in treatments for tumors in areas such as the brain, abdomen and prostate.
